Because 904L has a very low carbon content (maximum 0.020%), no carbide will be precipitated under normal heat treatment and welding conditions. This eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion that usually occurs after heat treatment and welding. The 904L stainless steel tube can be passivated even in reducing environments, such as sulfuric acid and formic acid, due to the high chromoly content and the addition of copper. The high nickel content results in low corrosion rate even in active state. In the concentration range of 0~98% pure sulfuric acid, 904L can be used at up to 40℃. In the range of 0~85% concentration of pure phosphoric acid, its corrosion resistance is very good. In industrial phosphoric acid produced by wet process, impurities have a strong effect on corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of 904L stainless steel tubes is superior to that of ordinary stainless steel tubes in all phosphoric acids. In highly oxidizing nitric acid, corrosion resistance is lower than that of highly alloyed steel without molybdenum.
